I can see how the game was inspired by Bauer's phenomenal work. It is mostly vibrant, but you still get the feeling of unease and tension, even in broad daylight. Lovely essay. Did you finish the game?
I almost wish I were a gamer now. Also, all I'm hearing is the NIN/Reznor and Ross version of "In the Hall of the Mountain King". That's not a complaint. xo
It's never too late to become a gamer, Sandra 😄. Gaming as a medium for storytelling has never been in a better place. There is some fine, fine interaction fiction covering all manner of genres and playstyles and the last five or so years have been incredible.
Maybe, Nathan. I'm finally giving up some of my addictions (certain Bravo shows, FFS), but always seem to find new distractions on BritBox...and I have a book to write! Perhaps once that's done, I'll dive in. (But I can be an obsessive game player. I went to a specific car wash that had a Ms. PacMan. It got to the point where I was so good, getting to the highest levels, the gentleman would just bring the keys over to me and tell me where he parked the car...I was going to be there for a while. I need to get a few ducks in order just in case.) xo
Haha, gotcha. Well, I'd definitely avoid the games that are made to deliberately just keep you glued to the screen then ;)
If you do ever go down this route and want some immersive fiction with incredible writing, my top recommendations would be Disco Elysium and Citizen Sleeper.
I didn't realise the origin/inspiration for The Mountain King. I love the artstyle and how eerie it is from the trailers. I haven't gotten around to it myself yet, but great to hear your thoughts.
Thank you for sharing this captivating insight into the life and work of John Bauer. It is indeed tragic that Bauer's promising career was cut short at such a young age, but his legacy lives on.
I did yes, just last week. It’s so gory and great, but beautiful nonetheless x
Very much agreed, you should play the game! You’re so welcome, thank you for your kind words x
It’s really easy, just walking and some puzzles. I’ve just finished Firewatch too, what an amazing game x

It’s never too late, come join us gamers x
LOL. The problem is, I'd stay up too late! xo
Haha you’d be in good company x

Thanks so much, Nathan. I'll keep those in mind. Big fan of disco and sleep! LOL. xo
Hehehe 😆
Such beautiful, haunting images! Always surprising us with your subjects. :)
Thank you. Gotta keep you all on your toes haha.

Great stuff, as usual. :)
