I will have to revisit Didion after reading this. The distance you speak of, I never liked, though I did love her memoir heart and soul.

I just reread The White Album and I couldn’t help but see the parallels with our own current times ~ Didion saw with the stillness of a steely eye, awakening us to all we need to see.

Beautifully written.

I read The Year of Magical Thinking only a few months ago, and I had been waiting to do so at the right time. It was aesthetic, and it was moral, as you say, in not indulging in its sentiments. There is something thrilling about that.
