I have only seen the film, not read the book, though your piece makes me want to return to the film and go read the book (I'm finding that Substack is resulting in my TBR pile growing ever larger!!)
I enjoyed the film a lot, though it wasn't what I was expecting it to be. I saw it in a cinema a few years ago and the long, slow shots were really something on the big screen. We even had an intermission. Was quite the experience.
