Empire of the Sun I am afraid to say I only saw the movie, Crash at least I read and saw but that is where my familiarity with Ballard ends. Re: Crash I had a conversation once where one person talked about Crash (2004) and I was raving about Crash (1996) at that point in time neither had seen the other movie and we were quite perplexed for a minute 😅 I have since seen Crash (2004). Both movies are worth watching. Happy birthday!
It was quite the conversation in which both were completely convinced to be in the right and the other one to be absolutely wrong, only to realise that we were both right and wrong in a Schrödinger sense of way until the box was lifted and we realised there were two cats, both of them alive. Wait... what?
Wow, Crash sounds super intense and super interesting, can't wait to check it out. Wishing you such a happy birthday, my love. I hope you've had the most wonderful day. Big hugs 💗
Happy birthday, babe! This is a highly informative write-up. I didn't know about the book, nor the movie, shamefully. But I feel Cronenberg's work should be enjoyed minimally because it's just so grotesque lol. I did watch a Crash movie, but it is a wrong one. However, knowing that James Spader is in this one, I must must must watch it.
What a fantastic way to celebrate your special day with a post. May your birthday be filled with joy, reflection, and perhaps a bit of contemplation inspired by the rich and thought-provoking works of J.G. Ballard!
Meh, another year frittered away? Sounds as if you’ve attained the age where as much is forgotten each year as is learned. So,
happy mid life crisis.
I do, despite my normal sarcastic screed, want to thank you for introducing me more to this author. I saw the movie Empire of the Sun and didn’t like it. That’s not criticism of the author as movies rarely mimic the book. I will now read the book because I’ve also read a wonderful book about POWs of Japan called Shantung Compound. This prison was under diplomatic control, not military and provides a total different POW experience where the prisoners rule within the compound.
Happy Birthday from an old geezer. BTW, the flip of the years pace increases with age.
Happy birthday, LRT. As a film student, CRASH is one of those devoured and discussed movies. Love all the info you shared. Have a marvelous time celebrating! xo
This is a special birthday post! HBD 🥳 Always adding to the wonderful art being explored on Substack.
Thank you lovely 🥰

😅
I once had a phone call with a friend for a good 10 minutes before I realised it wasn't my friend but his housemate.
The guy I was on the phone to also thought I was someone he knew ... It was a fun and strange ten minutes.
🤣🤣
Bahaha, you should write a mix-up story about Crash. I watched the wrong one according to this essay! XD

XD Again...this needs to be a story!

Happy birthday!
Not somebody I have read - but, a fascinating and great post as always. And, Happy Birthday! 🥳
Aww thank you lovely, definitely an author you should checkout x
Happy birthday. I'm so glad I found your work.
Very interesting comments and a fascinating analysis of a wonderful film.
Recently I wrote an essay comparing this film with Julia Ducournau's Titane.
There is a film of The Atrocity Exhibition too, have you seen it?
Happy birthday! 🥳🥳🥳 Thanks for all the info here. I'm embarrassed to say I have read none of his work, nor have I seen the film Crash!
Time to rectify that.
